• Connected – inviting you to drop in and talk about love
• Celebrated – your stories by weaving them together to create our town’s very own power ballad.
• Serenaded – you with a performance of ‘Late Night Love’, a show about expectation, romance and Richard Gere.

They invited the public to drop in and talk about love. Over the course of the week the stories were collected and woven together to create the ultimate gift a town can have: its very own power ballad.

Delving into the hearts of the people of Preston, Eggs Collective wanted to know what love was and created a unique portrait of the town, which was unveiled at The Continental, complete with billowing veils and candles. This was followed by a performance of ‘Late Night Love’, a funny and angry show about expectation, romance and Richard Gere.

The Last Battle was commissioned as part of The Harris Museum, Library, and Art Gallery’s ‘The Last Battle On English Soil’.

We…..

• Animated the streets – by transforming Church Street into a battle between Jacobites and rebels
• Connected – people as we asked what you would do if you encountered an angry Jacobite in a takeaway on Church Street?
• Celebrated – our town and its rich history

Listening, Responding, Connecting, Transforming 

We created a large public-access audiovisual & performance event, placing the events of 1715 into the contemporary contexts of Preston in 2015.

Community Engagement – Bringing Heritage To Life  
We asked “What would you do if you encountered an angry Jacobite in full battle mode in a takeaway on Church Street? Run a mile? Join the rebels? Inform the Government? Ask for a chip?”

The Last Battle performance built on our community engagement workshops from our associate and commissioned artists, including stories written and performed by 7-9 yr olds, placed as audio installations and lanterns made during public workshops and given out on site.

Through promenade performance and artist commissioned sound and light, this family-friendly event allowed audience members to discover stories about their own city while being engaged in helping stop the war on their doorsteps.

Those at The Battle could get involved by picking a side, building a barricade, singing along to battle out a Jacobite, asking onsite historians questions. Or simply just picking up a protest lantern and giving a heckle and riot shout!

Audiovisual artist commission interventions included – Large scale Projection mapping,  CCTV camera installations pre recorded scenes &  commissioned films and played through tamyos, TV’s and flat screens inside multiple  open venues and in windows onto the street.  Commissioned Sound pieces played through shop tanoys and speakers onto the street. Recorded stories to be intermittently listened to from inside a sited taxi.

Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund
We were commended in a letter from the DCMS Minister of Heritage for our contemporary heritage work.

They Eat Culture are opening up conversations of Diversity Representation

Balackstar Glory screening &  Round Table discussion: how do we make our work more diverse?

In partnership with Creative Lancashire, alongside the BFI national programme Black Star we presented our Screen Opps event, and introduce an ongoing dialogue around creative practice and diverse voices.

Hosted by Ruth Heritage on behalf of Screen Opps, and led by Chantal Oakes (artist & moving image), Lynn Shorter (Reading the World UCLan), and Adrian Murrell (Windrush Initiatives)

We hosted a conversation around diversity alongside creative practice, broadcast, writing & screen-art, with a special focus on a black voice perspective as part of the Black Star programme.

We invited all interested in diversity and representation to come along and take part in a wide discussion about how best to nurture a commitment to diversity and representation across our wide ranging communities, inclusive of BAME, disabilities, neurodiversity, LGBTQ, gender, age, class & socio-economic conversations.

Theatre

Chip Shop Chips 2016

It was the grand reopening of Booth’s Fish & Chip Shop. Eric returned home, over forty years after he left, and it was time for a fresh start. But old flame Christine had other ideas. Transported back to a time of chippy teas and Northern Soul, there was unfinished business for these old lovers. Watching teenage love stumble as hapless Lee make a pass at the beautiful Jasmine, was it all just history repeating?

Focusing on love at different ages and celebrating the nation’s favourite food, Chip Shop Chips was an immersive, participatory love story set in a chippy performing in unusual spaces across the North.

Audiences  put on their dancing shoes, tucked into a fish supper and enjoyed  a unique theatrical experience. Dinner, dance and a show all rolled into one!

Film

Working in conjunction with Cinema for All and in programme consultation with the Foxton centre clients, we delivered a season of screenings at The Foxton Centre. The events have brought people together for all the groups that use the centre, not only for entertainment but in some instances it has facilitated conversation about  their own experiences that run parallel to film thematics. We hope to extend the programe as it has had such a positive impact on individuals.

This project is supported by Film Hub North West Central, part of the BFI Film Audience Network.

They Eat Culture  recruited 6 young people to aged from 16-19, from a variety of current organizational partners and from public access, to work with a key film & arts specialists and practitioners to develop their skills in film programming, film event management, marketing, critical engagement, and film literacy, prior to delivering a series of  screening events. Inspiring the Young Programmers and  igniting their interest in setting up film events of their own and engaging in working on future They Eat Culture screening projects.

The Young Programmers stepped up and took ownership of their screenings and brought in a younger demographic to They Eat Culture events broadening our reach and gaining very positive audience responses.

Alongside undertaking all of the jobs required to produce the screenings events the Young People visited Manchester Animation Festival, wrote film reviews and delivered live introductions to the screenings at The Continental and Preston collage film events.

The Young Programmers also got involved in programming short films, and fed into programming for our film club giving them valuable insight into different audiences and a real life experience of the considerations to make when selecting films.

A film recourses page was produced for further reading and access for the Young People to continue their interest in learning about film.

The project was coordinated by Jackie Jones film manager at They Eat Culture and the workshops were led by Michael Peirce of Cinema Nation.

The project was funded by BFI through Media Active.

Synopsis

Ultra-black comedy about a psychotic man and his murderous pets.

Jerry is a seemingly normal man trying to succeed in his new job at the Milton Bathtub Factory. He lives in a normal apartment the type you would expect from a young bachelor with his dog, Bosco, and his cat, Mr. Whiskers. Yet something seems off. As the new guy at work, Jerry is asked to help plan the company picnic, and he meets Fiona, an attractive English girl from accounting. Jerry immediately takes a liking to Fiona and excitedly goes home to tell his pets about her. And surprisingly, they answer. But all this is just the beginning of an insanely bizarre and twisted tale.

A grated brain, elephants painting rescue signs and opera-singing penguins are just a few of the vignettes of gold within Symphony No. 42.

Flowing through dreams, and enduring through nightmares, this short is more than a collection of bits. There’s a formed coherent narrative on life and its marvelous magic. Whilst the joyous creative visuals abound, there’s a rationality to all this irrationality.

We are really passionate about having an impact on the development of the cultural sector in Preston and Lancashire. We see the huge amount of creative talent coming out of our local universities and want to offer support and guidance to those developing emerging careers in the arts. Building on our specialism in socially engaged practice we are also keen to work with more established artists who want to take their practice directly into communities and explore ways of working that make change and have a real social impact.

UK-wide celebration of Roald Dahl on Film

Film Hub Wales and Chapter as Film Hub Lead Organisations for The British Film Institute in Wales, put together a major, UK-wide programme designed to celebrate the most magnificent Welsh storyteller, Roald Dahl.

The programme saw an extraordinary array of film screenings and supporting activity delivered across the UK from the re-release of The BFG in July 2016, through to the centenary of his birth on the 13th September.

They Eat Culture worked on a programme of events across the city with local partners,  including interactive events and outdoor movie screenings.

Family screenings included:

Chitty Bang Bang at The Foxton Centre

Scratch ‘n Sniff Cinema present Matilda: Family Screening with specially commissioned cards from Scratch n’ Sniff Cinema to smell their way through the film!

James and the Giant Peach: Free Family screening brought to Preston’s Flag Market with family giant games, fresh peaches and an hour long set from Gideon Conn songwriter and performer extraordinaire  Gideon Conn, who kept audiences entertained prior to the screening. A wonderful outdoor cinema experience in the heart of the city.

Adult screenings included:

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: A selection of invariably surprising episodes written by Dahl for the classic anthology presented by master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock. 4 episode series

The Night Digger: The dreary existence of middle-aged spinster Maura takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of young handyman Billy Jarvis, but there is more to Billy than meets the eye. Finding herself fascinated by his nocturnal forays, she learns to her horror why he spends so much time outdoors at night. An eerie Bernard Herrmann score ups the tension as Patricia Neal, then Dahl’s wife, provides sexual tension and a certain Gothic flavour.
